Thread: Novell

    Novell

Ok, so some people at Villanova use Novell (which is a networking thing, in case you didn't know) on their computers. Villanova emailed everyone saying something about downloading it, so I thought I'd try it... BIG MISTAKE... Now I can't get on my normal computer (I'm using another one). It gives me the stupid sign on box for Novell before going into Windows and asks for a username and password. I never made one...

Any ideas on how to get rid of it or uninstall it? I checked the Start menu button for Novell, no uninstall button. I checked the Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs thing; I couldn't find it there, either. I tried searching for "novell" and I deleted everything I found about it... Nothing works. (I did all this from Safe Mode.)

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks guys.

    format your computer

    or

Remove the client in Network properties. To do so, follow these steps:

    In Control Panel, double-click Network.
Click the Novell 32-bit client, and then click Remove.
Click the Novell 32-bit IPX protocol, and then click Remove.
Add the Microsoft Client for NetWare Networks. This step ensures that registry entries created by Novell's installation program are overwritten. After you install the Microsoft client and restart the computer, you can either remove the Microsoft client or leave it installed. To add the Microsoft client, follow these steps:

    In Network properties, click Add.
Click Client, and then click Add.
In the Manufacturers box, click Microsoft. In the Network Clients box, click Microsoft Client for NetWare Networks, and then click OK.
Click OK. When you are prompted to restart the computer, click No.
Click the Start button, point to Find, and then click Files or folders. In the Named box, type netdef.inf, and then click Find Now. When the file is found, right-click the file, and then click Rename. Rename the file to Netdef.nw.
If Novell's 32-bit client has been installed only once, click the Start, point to Find, and then click Files or folders. In the Named box, type netdef.bnw, and then click Find Now. When the file is found, right-click the file, and then click Rename. Rename the file to Netdef.inf. This restores the original Netdef.inf file. Shut down and restart your computer, and skip the remaining steps in this article. If the 32-bit client has been installed more than once, or if you are not sure, continue with step 5.
Extract a new copy of the Netdef.inf file from your original Windows 95 CD-ROM or disks.

To extract the Netdef.inf file from the CD-ROM, type the following command at a command prompt
    extract drive:\win95\precopy2.cab netdef.inf /L c:\windows\inf

where drive is the drive letter of the CD-ROM drive. To extract the Netdef.inf file from the floppy disk, type the following command
    extract drive:\precopy2.cab netdef.inf /L c:\windows\inf

where driveis the drive letter of the floppy disk drive. Insert disk 2 in the floppy disk drive before typing this command.
Shut down and restart your computer.

I'm not rude, you're just insignificant.

    Easier solution:

You will need to download the following file:
    Uninstall Novell Client Software (UNC32.EXE)

Right click on the filename and select "Save Link As"
Navigate to the folder you created (c:\uninstall client in example above).
Click "Open" and wait until file downloads.
A dialogue box will tell you that the Novell Client will be uninstalled and not to cancel or turn off your computer. Click OK.
The Novell Client will now automatically uninstall (this takes a few minutes.) When it is finished, you may be asked if you want to reboot your system.

Wow! Fast response! Sweet. Anyway, it didn't quite work.

    1. I can't access the Network properties in Safe Mode.

    2. I can't use the Internet on that computer in Safe Mode. I downloaded the file you told me to get in your second post on this computer and put it on a CD (heh, cause my floppy drive and CD-ROM are interchangeable on my laptop (the messed up comp) and I didn't feel like changing the drives...) and tried copying it in the folder C:/Windows/System32/ because that's where everything else was. I didn't know what you meant by:

"Navigate to the folder you created (c:\uninstall client in example above)."

So, I tried running it, and it said:

"Uninstall was unable to load NWUNC32.DLL"

    ...any ideas? (Thanks again man.)

    Are you running XP?

If so there should be a safe mode with network capabilities.

"Navigate to the folder you created (c:\uninstall client in example above)."
Just create a folder to download that file to.

    Yes, I'm running XP Pro...

There is a Safe Mode with network capabilities, but when I use it, it loads the Novell sign on box.

You didn't answer my question about the missing dll file...where can I get that ( NWUNC32.DLL )? It's not on my computer anywhere.

what happeneed is prolly because you deleted all the files you found, you deleted one of the files the unistall needs in order to run...

Ok, so that new file is correct, but now it says "Uninstall failed due to an error initializing Setupx.dll." Then when I hit "OK", it says "UNC32 caused a General Protection Fault in module KRNL386.EXE at 0001:2C78. Choose close. UNC32 will close."

It's probably because I deleted all the files (like Agent said)... Do you think I should try downloading Novell again and installing it over top of the original, and then trying the uninstall program?

  11. #11
I tried reinstalling Novell, but it gives me the same error message about Setupx.dll ...

I once had a password/username thing on my computer. I tried typing in any and all usernames/passwords that I know of. It turned out that all I had to do was press enter with both fields empty.

    could work

I suggest you format your computer. Transfer all your important files to the laptop and wipe the hard drive clean.

Thanks for the idea, but I tried this long ago.

And also, now I know what my username and password are, but I never set up the server thing fully, so nothing will work there...

I still need to figure out how to uninstall it...

NO WAY!!!! I'll figure it out somehow. (It's the laptop that's messed up anyway...)

I definitely don't want to format...unless I REALLY have to. I can't believe this is so hard to get rid of. Why is Novell so gay?

    DAMN YOU NOVELL!!
    Forever today.

  26. #26
uninstall it then take off your system restore- reboot and turn sys. restore back on ?

  27. #27
Fate, how could that work if I can't uninstall it?... And why would I turn off System Restore now, after the damage has been done? (Maybe I'm not following what you're saying. Please enlighten me.)

  28. #28
Somtiems to fully get rid of soemthing you have to take the system restore off; lets say if a registery were to be changed by the installation. When you reboot your computer, windows will actomatically put it back the way it was before the uninstall.

SO by uninstalling and then taking off the system restore- rebooting- you can be positively sure its gone.

    windows xp right?
right click on My Computer--> click the System Restore Tab---> check off the "Turn Off System Restore"

    Reboot, and then uncheck it.

  29. #29
Ok, so I had already "uninstalled" it. I turned off System Restore and then rebooted. That didn't work. Is that what you wanted me to do?

Yes, I am using Windows XP Professional.

Is there a way to access your Network Connections from DOS?

Only thing that i can think of is that Crisis may have directed you to the wrong uninstall prog. (There's one for win9x and one for xp/2000) ... although this seems unlikely given how many times XP has been mentioned in this thread ... wait ... rgr that ... if im not mistaken .. the prog that Crisis linked u to is for 95/98 ... try dllin the same prog from a diff site ... search for xp unc.exe or something like that

EDIT: FATE was definitely in the right direction w/ the system restore ... Windows has a tendency to protect critical things like that ... so if u do dl another unc.exe ... run it after disabling system restore

  32. #32
YO YO YO!! I just checked my uninstall program for Novell and Rainman was right -- it's for Win 95/98!!!!!!!!!!! CRISIS!!!! heh.

But now I need an uninstall program for Win XP...

  33. #33
nevermind what I said about crisis being smart with computer stuff.

  34. #34
Ok, this case is FINALLY settled!! :D I was searching for an uninstall program for Windows XP, when I stumbled upon Novell's website. It had a manual way to uninstall Novell!!!!!!!!!! It had me delete certain registry keys, and IT WORKED!!!!!!!!! WOO HOO!!! I'm back on my laptop.

Thanks guys for all your efforts, particularly Crisis.
