If theres a station that deserves it's own thread, you'd be hard pressed to argue against HBO.
Seems to me they don't make bad shows. Just wondering what everyone's favorites have been?
I'd say Oz, The Sopranos and maybe even Deadwood are my favorite. I can't believe they jsut ended Deadwood though, guess it was an unappreciated show?

I felt the same about Carnivale :(
Still working my way through the backlogs of Deadwood. I love westerns, the woman not so much. But she's warming to it.

Showtime's lineup is better than HBO's right now.

My absolute favorite HBO show was The Wire. Though I have to admit I missed it airing and watched it on DVD. #2 was probably Rome.

YES! The Wire is by far the best series I have ever watched. Go go McNulty.
Entourage and True Blood (that might make me gay) are both excellent too.

Why would True Blood make you gay? Ana Paquin full nude getting pounded... sounds like a blast to me. Not to mention, vampires aren't gay... Twilight is gay... vampires are not. It's a shame how Hollywood has seen it necessary to rape and pillage great horror monsters and turn them into pale emo tween porn...
Back to the topic, HBO is the original, but showtime is definitely a close second. Best show was the Sopranos... there's no comparison, even if it had a couple hiccups along the way. Sopranos, Entourage, Sex and the City (not saying I'm a fan), Oz, True Blood, Rome, Big Love... the channel has come out with some of the absolute biggest TV shows in the past decade and has basically made all normal TV obsolete for me... how the hell anyone can watch shit like Hero's and Lost (let the raging begin) when you have HBO is beyond me... for family time, sure, I can allow that excuse, but if you are an adult without kids and you're looking for a show to get into, how can you not go with HBO?

Dexter
Weeds
The Tudors
Borgias
Nurse Jackie
Californication
Brotherhood
The Big C
Not a bad group of current shows. :) Sex, Drugs, Violence... many with a twist.

Dexter is great, Californication is watchable, the rest i would never bother with.
Breaking Bad, Sons of Anarchy, Dexter are the only things outside of HBO that deserve any attention, and Sons of Anarchy and Dexter are both coming off of weak seasons.
Oh also The Walking Dead had a fantastic first season (only six episodes) but i have very high hopes for that

Dexter a bad season!? What is this blasphemy you spew!? They went from an absolute epic season, to just an amazing season... but I'd hardly look down on it... Jordan was a great character

True Blood won't make you gay. However, becoming aroused by the scene where Eric is doing that other guy in front of a roaring fire DOES mean you're a little gay.

Jordan was good, Stiles didn't do it for me. I rank the season's as such. 4, 1, 2, 5, 3.
Its as simple as this, Dexter is getting soft, and they will never have a villain like Arther again, Lithgow knocked it outta the park with that one...
True Blood ruined what used to be a pretty awesome monster in vampires. Can you imagine how easily Blade would be able to destroy anything in that show? Maybe not from behind bars though lol

all this favorite show stuff and nobody mentions Rome, Generation Kill, or Boardwalk Empire.
I mean Generation Kill is at least an honorable mention but come on Boardwalk Empire should have been a first post thing man that show is beyond epic.

hazaa, i get the feeling you haven't watched true blood before. the vampires are much stronger than blade vampires. they have the fantastic regeneration, much more strength, telepathy, and can get from one end of a state to another within a minute. true blood vamps are stronger than nosferatu, dracula, blade vamps, underworld vamps, and twilight vamps. they stomp the shit out of werewolves, with only real challenge coming from the maynad and arguably fairies.
only stronger ones are anne rice's, but its hard to compete when the strongest can locate you anywhere on earth and make your head explode or alternatively light you on fire (top 5 strongest or so). not only can they do that to you, but selectively to half of the entire population simultaneously (akasha vs 9/10 of males).
if it weren't clear enough, i'm a fan of vampires.

Sloan is right (guess Hell froze over today)... True Blood vamps are exponentially stronger than most other vamps. To say that Blade could tkae them is ridiculous... blades vamps have fangs and make loud noises... True Blood vamps, especially ones like Godric, are able to battle the hand maidens of the gods...
And yes, Generation Kill was a good show, Boardwalk Empire was good, and Rome was amazing... but...
Generation Kill wasn't a show, it was a Mini Series in line with Band of Brothers, which Band of Brothers was by FAR better
Boardwalk Empire is good, but not as good as The Sopranos
Rome had 1 season, then 1 really fast season... had it gone on, I think it was set up to be the best show they'd ever had... but since season 2 was forced to finish quickly because of the costs, you leave with the feeling that you missed out on something really special
As for Dexter, you can't keep comparing every season to the Arthur season... it's just not a fair comparison. They hit gold with that season, and it should be appreciated, but to say the show is now crap because it doesn't live up to that is ridiculous. The Jordan season was still awesome, and Stiles as a companion for Dexter was a very nice transition for his character, not to mention it allowed someone to finally accept him... which will hopefully lead up to the big reveal to Deb

didn't say it was crap, but the show clearly piqued with season 4, and you can't tell me Dexter hasn't gotten soft...
Any vampire who can be outmatched by a fairy is a pussy, no if ands or buts about it, that being said, there are fairies in that show?. And no i have too much pride to have seen more than a couple episodes of true blood, and id be lieing if i said i did so for any other reason that paquins tits.
Of all these shows i have to say, although not the best show from the bunch, Deadwood features probably my favorite character in Al Swearengen

anna paquin is the last surviving fairy. vampires hunted down and killed all fairies because they have the tastiest blood, and their blood provides temporary imperviousness to sunlight. they control the power of life which has saved anna a few times, but it wasn't strong enough to save every other fairy to exist. i guess i shouldn't have said fairies could compete. only maynads!
btw, there is much more to see than anna. her brother and eric pull some nice tail.

Just watched the first couple episodes of Deadwood, will probably watch a couple more before I go to sleep for the night. So far I like it, but one of the women (Jane, I think her name is) is really getting on my nerves. Hope she gets killed off, lulz.
I've seen a couple episodes of The Wire, and liked it, but never really watched it as a series. I'll probably look for the first season pretty soon.

the info about faries from the book series is different (she isnt the last one, she's only 1/8th, weak to lemon/iron some other shit), Claudette is also a real character instead of in her imagination/whatever she is in the show. It's been a while since i read them, i dont remember it ever specifically saying either one can just own the other out right, but the vampires always seem to say/act like they are slightly afraid of the fairies should they be in a like "1 v 1 open/fair/honest" fight.
I've also liked a few of the HBO documentaries, Afghan Star and the one about Katrina by Spike Lee, the yes men fix the world
Surprised no one has said East Bound and Down

You're pretty much right with Rome. Well right actually. However, for you to say that Boardwalk Empire is not as good as the Sopranos is somewhat of an apples to oranges statement, aside from the fact that they're both mobster series. First, the Sopranos ran for how many seasons?, and Boardwalk Empire is just finishing its first. To compare them is kind of unfair. Secondly if you want to go for content and potential (a word that is often not lived up to in TV, I know) Boardwalk will take the cake. Its set in the one city aside from Chicago and New York that was literally THE birth place of organized crime. Every Mafia man that had a movie made about him either did at least one job there or came from there. The show touches base with all of the legendary mobsters and has a cast that, I'm not going to lie, makes me spooge. Plus Scorsese is producing the entire thing and directing parts of it. I may (but hopefully am not) be getting ahead of myself when I say this but, where the Sopranos was great, Boardwalk Empire will redefine if not raise the bar of what we call mobster TV.

I think Boardwalk has a ton of potential... but since it is historical, it can't take the liberties a show like Sopranos could. You know where all the main players end up, so everyone has a protective immortality bubble. Think about the 2 agents and how that ended up and how awesome that was... couldn't happen between Luciano and Capone.
Keep in mind, this is my absolute favorite time period short of ancient Rome. I grew up wanting to be Lucky Luciano, and I did college reports on Al Capone. I think they're doing a great job, but there is an X factor I'm not feeling from the show. It is only the first season so I still think it could be one of the best ever, but since it is only the first season it has to prove itself before it can dethrone The Sopranos, which I still think is a fair comparison because they are both based on how characters react and engage while living the double lives of mafia / real world.
And yes, for comedies, East Bound and Down is amazing. Show is so ridiculously random... but damn it is entertaining.

The Sopranos was great but i don't see it as being that much better than other shows.
Boardwalk is great, except they seem to give fuckin Shroader too much screen time...
Jane gets more tolerable in Deadwood, but Swearengen is where its at man.
East Bound and Down is fuckin hysterical, i don't know that i've seen an episode i didn't enjoy..
Outside of HBO, Breaking Bad and The Walking Dead have been hugely entertaining for me

From what I understand the writers in Carnivale confused themselves... to the point where a bunch of random stuff happened and they presented Good vs Evil, but didn't know where to take it from there. I actually liked that series just because it was so different from anything else out there, but you are very right... there is no clear direction other than the main theme of Good vs. Evil, but even that seemed murky.

Murky is an understatement at this point. I kinda liked the psychic vegetable and thought it would be cool if she got healed but like every other potential good direction they just ignored it. It feels like a sitcom where nothing really changes at the end of each episode.
